Tips for Caring for Your Pets during the Summer Months

Four Ways To Get Your Dog To Take Pills

by Kirk Hernandez

When you have a dog that needs to take medication in order to be as healthy as possible, it can sometimes be hard to know how to get your pet to eat the pill. Most dogs will not simply eat a pill when you give it to them. If you need to give your dog a pill, use the guide below to learn a few creative ways to get him or her to take it quickly and easily.

Try Pill Treats

There are now dog treats available that are specifically designed for pill administration. They have a small slit in the center of the treat where you can slip the pill into the treat. When your dog goes to eat the meaty treat, he or she will swallow the pill with it. The dog may not even realize the pill was in it, thanks to the flavorful meaty flavor of the treat.

Try Mixing It with Wet Dog Food

Another great way to get your dog to take his or her pills is to mix it in with wet dog food. There is dog food on the market that has chunks of meat in it. Pour the food into a bowl and add the pill in the center of one of the pieces of meat. Your dog will scarf down the food and the pill will be scarfed down right along with it.

Try Using a Block of Cheese

There are some human foods that are safe for dogs to eat. Cheese happens to be one of those foods. Cut a small block of cheese and cut a slit into it. Slip the pill into the cheese and then give it to the dog as a treat.

Try Peanut Butter

Many dogs love peanut butter. It sticks to the roof of their mouths and causes them to have to swallow over and over again. Place a small dollop of chunky peanut butter on a plate and push the pill into the center. As the dog enjoys the peanut butter, he or she will swallow the pill and may think that it was just one of the chunks of peanuts.

Giving your dog pills requires a bit of creativity from time to time. You can try all or just a few of the methods above to ensure that your dog takes their medication properly. You may want to consider changing up your methods on a daily basis so that your dog does not figure out that you are sneaking pills to them because it could make it more difficult to get them to take their medication in the future.
